drivers and diagnostic support (if available), and the system will automatically
configure the PCI adapters.
If you have a system installed and running, then you can use smit cfgmgr. This
method will require you to put the AIX installation media in place (CD-ROM, tape,
and so forth) before configuring the adapters. The media will be used only if the
device drivers for your adapters are not currently installed.
You can also manually install the device drives and diagnostics before running
cfgmgr or rebooting the system for automatic PCI adapter configuration.
When using PCI adapters, the slot number is as important as it is in microchannel
devices. If you change an adapter from slot A to slot B, the original adapter
information for slot A will be kept in a defined state; a new definition will be created
for slot B, and a new device will be configured.
6.2.1 Configuring Non-Graphic PCI Adapters
Configuring PCI adapters is very easy because they are actually configured
automatically when their driver software is installed and the cfgmgr program is run.
The easiest way to configure "non-graphic" PCI adapters (such as LAN adapters
and so on) installed after IPL is to proceed in the same way as with microchannel
adapters. For example, using the SMIT support, enter:
smit devices
Install/Configure Devices Added After IPL
You may have to provide a source for the device driver software package for the
new PCI device if it is not yet installed.
Important
Do not use the above procedure if you want to add or replace graphic adapters
because if anything goes wrong (for example, a required device driver is not yet
installed, and so forth), you will end up in front of a blank screen.
To add or change PCI graphic adapters, proceed as described in 5.6, “Graphics
Support” on page 92.
If, for whatever reason, you need to install software but you are unable to boot from
hard disk or you have no working display, you may install the software while in
maintenance mode.
6.2.2 Configuring SCSI Devices
Both the RS/6000 Model E20 and the RS/6000 Model F30 feature one integrated
SCSI-2 Fast Interface. On both systems, only internal devices are supported, but
external PCI SCSI-2 adapters can be installed to attach external SCSI devices.
The process of configuring SCSI devices on PCI-based RS/6000 systems is exactly
the same as it is in microchannel-based RS/6000 systems. This means you can
use the SMIT support to configure devices that are added after IPL, enter the
cfgmgr command, or reboot the system. However, remember that unlike with AIX
Version 3.2, on AIX Version 4, the software support for the device you are adding
may not yet be installed. Thus, check to see if the device driver for your SCSI
